Lupang Hinirang
Lupang Hinirang is a performance inspired by the life and death of Flor Contemplacion, a Filipina domestic worker executed abroad, and the countless migrant women trafficked, abused by their employers, and abandoned by their governments. The title, taken from the Philippine national anthem, reflects the fraught promises of a "chosen land"—a belonging, both in the motherland and the paradise abroad, often denied to those who sacrifice the most.
The performance invites the audience to confront the systemic neglect of migrant workers by embassies and governments while questioning the complicity of global structures that perpetuate their exploitation. Through ritualistic gestures and symbolic objects, such as the Philippine passport, the piece becomes both a memorial and a call to action, shedding light on stories that demand justice and accountability. Lupang Hinirang transforms the space into a site of collective reflection, underscoring the resilience of migrant women and the urgent need to address the cycles of violence they endure.
